Tombs of Ashes

All civilizations forget overtime. They forget their roots, their histories, not as much by neglect but simply through embellishment or a lose of a few words here and there, a few descriptions, until the memory of what they were is more a myth than fact, and what they are right now is all that matters.

Still though, there are always ancient tombs that have recorded the progress of man... and other creatures. Massive in size, they are so old that if touched by any except the most trained of hands, they would fall apart like ash in the wind. These tombs have guardians, their knowledge a vast pool, they record what has been and some can even record what will be...

Hey all, it's been awhile, got a new job so I've been pretty busy getting my ass comfortable with it. This piece has been sitting on my comp for awhile, I finished it for 3dtotal a few months back, and figured it's about time to post this relic ;P

A few days back I came across an endearing picture on flicker http://www.flickr.com/photos/krasnayayagoda/5089613485/in/pool-60311583@N00/ and was compelled to attempt to accurately paint it in Corel Painter. It's a far departure from what I've been doing for awhile now, which has been stuff out of imagination, in this case it's a direct study and attempt at reproduction of a pic.

Mostly a personal challenge to develop my technique and keep honing focus. At first glance the pic might seem as if it came off alright, but taking a look at the minutia, a lot of stuff is off, like her cute little hands. It's frustrating to me, I could bloody well still noodle the pic more but this was supposed to be pratice, not a full fledged endeavor, so I better Stop.
Now.

Anyhoo, I included an animated gif because those are fun and educational(I hope)!
It's from my personal folio, I posted it half finished and have been meaning to go back to for awhile. Recently I found the time to at least get it to a semblance of what I was aiming for. It's not where I want it to be but I'm going to just take a deep breath and let it *be*...

Mermaids Anguish (WARNING: bit of nudie )

This one has been sitting in my folio for awhile now, I've been meaning to get to it and finally have found the chance to do so. Going back to the old pic I still have up in my folio(feel free to check, I'll keep it up for a bit longer) makes me feel like hurling...blah, you live and you learn....

As for the idea behind the pic- One day I thought to myself while reading a book on old world freak shows, if mermaids ever did exist, we, being the vile creatures that we are, would have hunted them down to extinction swiftly...

Obviously I exaggerated the anatomy here, with the barrel chest and the hands being so large, but still I attempted to make them convincing.

Felt like it was time for a little bit of B&W, focus more on the form, light. As for application, mostly I was inspired by some Baroque paintings I was studying when I first started this, I really wanted to push the feeling of drama and all that razmataz.

Anyhow, please do leave comments and crits if you have the time, they are appreciated.

Cheers,

So, from a Demons Grin to a Dragons Smile, here's a piece I did for the itsartmag.com competition. I wasn't able to get to it until about a week and a half back, damn frustrations since I would have liked to have worked more on it. That's a lesson to you kiddies, don't be like me, take advantage of the time you have. Anyhow, the deadline has come and fluttered by, so this be it.

I included a story, but I keep being told that I've got too many repeating symbols when I try to post and the link gets *starred* out when I try to post it, so I suppose I'll just have to omit it.
Anyhow, hope the piece is enjoyed, and as always leave me some feedback, crits or just banter.
Oye, not sure how long this one took. Each was to be a simple enough archetype,
